The Australian Civil Military Centre (ACMC), in partnership with the Australian Defence Force's Indo-Pacific Centre for Military Law, recently co-hosted the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Asia-Pacific Naval Warfare Symposium, bringing together military, legal and humanitarian experts from more than 20 countries to examine the challenges of contemporary maritime operations.

ACMC’s latest Protection of Civilians training seminar explored ways to best safeguard civilians and civilian infrastructure in conflict environments influenced by new and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI).

The three-day regional resilience workshop in Dili, Timor-Leste was an opportunity to share insights from previous responses, explore ways to further strengthen cooperation and consider developments, including an AI-enhanced early warning system.

ACMC conducted an interagency liaison officer course to strengthen Australia Defence Force members’ capacity to work with non-military partners.

The course prepares ADF and Defence Australian Public Servants to navigate the complexities of civil-military cooperation planning – a key consideration in most contemporary ADF operations.

The training places participants from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, French New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Vanuatu and USA in the position of actors responding to a complex scenario involving diverse affected communities. Course participants are building their awareness of best practice civil-military coordination principles and sharing their knowledge and practical insights from previous disaster responses.

ACMC supported the development of a new publication which draws on recent experiences in the Pacific region, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu to strengthen disaster preparedness and response.

ACMC conducted an interagency liaison officer course for government officials from Defence, Home Affairs, Australian Border Force, Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
