Preparing for future HADR challenges in the Indo-Pacific

ACMC’s Executive Director Nicola Rosenblum and Director International and Domestic Engagement, Peter Giugni led a session on developments in civil, military and police coordination in the Pacific and how Australia is working with partners to build regional HADR capabilities.

ACMC attended the “Focus In” conference hosted by the US Center for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance (CFE-DM) at INDOPACOM. The forum brought together regional, national and civil society organisations to discuss future needs and challenges for humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) in the Indo-Pacific.

ACMC’s Executive Director Nicola Rosenblum and Director International and Domestic Engagement, Peter Giugni led a session on developments in civil, military and police coordination in the Pacific and how Australia is working with partners to build regional HADR capabilities. Other sessions focussed on building climate resilience, regional humanitarian coordination, and major lessons from regional responses.

“This forum was an important opportunity for stakeholders across the region to consider future trends in HADR requirements and identify collectively ways to enhance preparedness and response in an integrated way” Ms Rosenblum said.

This engagement reflects ACMC’s strong and enduring relationship with CFE-DMHA, as the Hawaii-based agency marks its 30th anniversary. In July 2024, CFE Director Joseph Martin visited ACMC and we signed an MOU to enhance cooperation in research, coordination and capacity building in the Indo-Pacific region.
