The Australian Civil Military Centre (ACMC) delivered a three-day interagency disaster management workshop, in conjunction with the Timor-Leste Civil Protection Agency (CPA), the Australian Embassy in Timor-Leste and the Defence Cooperation Program Timor-Leste (DCP-TL).
The workshop, held in Dili on 5-7 June, aimed to strengthen Timor-Leste capacity to prepare for and respond to natural disasters by strengthening civil-military-police cooperation. Workshop participants included representatives from the Timor-Leste Civil Protection Authority (CPA), National Police of Timor-Leste, Timor-Leste Ministry of Defence, Timor-Leste Defence Force and a number of civil society organisations.
The workshop featured presentations and scenario-based group discussions. It included consideration of Gender, Peace and Security issues. There were key presentations from the ACMC, Timor-Leste CPA, UN Women in Timor-Leste and CARE International.
Timor-Leste is vulnerable to natural disasters. In 2021, Timor-Leste experienced serious flooding and landslides following Tropical Cyclone Seroja, which affected more than 30,000 households across Timor-Leste.
This workshop supported Timor-Leste’s Disaster Management Framework and further strengthened the close Australia-Timor-Leste relationship.
