There was strong representation from the Pacific at the annual meeting of the Regional Consultative Group on Humanitarian Civil-Military Coordination for Asia-Pacific (RCG) in Thailand.
The RCG is the region’s premier forum for Governments, civil society, militaries and police to exchange on civil-military-police coordination. ACMC is a member of the RCG co-secretariat. The 10th annual RCG meeting was conducted in Phuket, which was severely impacted by the devastating Boxing Day tsunami.
“As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of that devastating event, it is so important that civil, military and police organisations continue to find ways to come together to improve coordination and cooperation to deliver outcomes for affected communities,” ACMC Executive Director Nicola Rosenblum said.
“In the intervening years since that sad day, there has been a significant uplift in crisis preparedness and response across the region, with well-developed national disaster management organisations to help populations prepare for, respond to, and recover from crises.”
“But despite the best efforts of governments across the region, natural disasters are becoming more frequent and more severe, placing more communities at risk. This makes coordinated civil-military-police responses more important than ever.”
Support for the RCG is part of ACMC’s contribution to building regional capacity and capability to response to disasters and crises.
