Susan is seconded to the ACMC, from the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) as the NGO Advisor. Her role is unique, providing a foot in both the government and non-government sectors, facilitating a
closer working relationship and enhanced trust between both sectors.
Susan’s ability to work with both the government and non-government sector stems from her professional experience across both sectors. She has filled a number of roles within the Department of Defence, including supporting and coordinating the development of strategic and operational capability concepts, developing departmental policy (UN, Africa and Peacekeeping) and human resource management. Susan also served in the Army Reserve for eight years, including time within a Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) unit.
Prior to her engagement by ACFID, Susan had established an extensive portfolio of volunteer work within the NGO sector, building upon a personal and professional ambition to work within the NGO community. She has advocated on human rights issues, fair trade and youth engagement with a range of NGOs, including Amnesty International, Oxfam and Invisible Children. She has also spent time volunteering and studying in China, Thailand, Bangladesh, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Awarded a Masters of International and Community Development, Susan has published on human security, protection of civilians, the conflict in northern Uganda, and other civil-military issues. She is passionate about her part to assist ACFID in its role as the coordinating body for non government overseas aid and international development organisations in Australia. To broaden her personal horizons, Susan chooses to holiday in countries where Australian Aid Programs are being delivered, hoping to gain a more fulsome understanding the challenges confronting those at the heart of aid delivery.
